Update ForNAV Cloud

$
0
0

When Microsoft introduces new versions of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Cloud/SaaS, customers are automatically upgraded to the latest version of Business Central.

When it comes to apps (such as the Customizable Report Pack from ForNAV), you must manage the update yourself. For this, Microsoft has added a new feature to the Business Central Admin Center, called Manage Apps.

You can read about how it works here:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/dev-itpro/administration/tenant-admin-center-manage-apps

We strongly recommend that you read this article from Microsoft and follow the instructions for upgrading the ForNAV Customizable Report Pack. Or let your Dynamics partner do it for you. In particular, please note that you must upgrade in a Sandbox first, test it – and then upgrade in your Production environment – after you have seen that everything works as it should.

Specifically for ForNAV, be aware of the following:

  • The ForNAV Customizable Report Pack consists of three apps (that have dependencies on each other):
    • Customizable Report Pack
    • ForNAV Core
    • ForNAV Language Module

  • When doing the upgrade, you must do it in the order 3-2-1, with the ForNAV Language Module first, then the ForNAV Core, and finally the Customizable Report Pack last. The Action Required status indicates this to you. After you select Install Update, the status changes to Update is Scheduled.

If you are using the ForNAV Designer, you must also install the newest version:

  1. Download

You can download the latest version of ForNAV from https://www.fornav.com/download/. This download contains all the installation options for the Designer and server computers.

  2. Install ForNAV on the Designer computers

When you install a new version of ForNAV, you must never uninstall any previous versions because you might need the old version dll later.

In the Setup wizard, select the Development installation option:

Finally, if you have created your own new reports, you might want to upgrade these, for example if you want to take advantage of new features in ForNAV. You can do this by simply opening the reports or layouts in the new version of the ForNAV Designer and saving them again.

Custom Address Formatting

In ForNAV 6.0, you get additional options to format addresses. We have extended the FieldGroups function to work with the new Custom Address Format functionality in Business Central. For this to work, in the Countries/Regions table, in the Address Format column, you must select Custom.

If you do not set a Custom format you can, of course, still use the standard formatting, such as PostCode+City, City+PostCode, and so on.

To edit the address format, for example, if you do not want Contact Person, you simply delete that line.

In Business Central 18, Microsoft has introduced a number of great new features, for example, Universal Print. Some of our partners have questioned how to position this specific feature against what ForNAV can do. Read on to compare the different ways of setting up local print in Business Central, with ForNAV and without.

In ForNAV, whether you are working OnPrem or in the Cloud, it is very easy to set up local print in Business Central:

  • Install ForNAV on your local PC.
  • Insert a new record in the ForNAV Local printer page with the name of the local printer.
  • Change the printer selection to use the local printer.

Alternatively, in RDLC/Word, the process to set up local print in Business Central is somewhat more involved, and only works OnPrem if you are using Azure Active Directory (AAD):

There are different ways to work with barcodes in Business Central. This article compares adding a barcode to a Business Central report, using the ForNAV Designer and without.

With ForNAV, it is very easy to add a barcode to a Business Central report:

  • Open the layout using the ForNAV Designer.
  • Drag in a field and press shift when dropping.
  • Select Barcode.
  • In the Quick Property window, select the type of barcode in Symbology.
  • Save the layout to the customer’s system.

Alternatively, in RDLC, adding a barcode to a Business Central report is more time-consuming and, if working OnPrem, it’s more costly too:

  • Download a demo barcode font (see Barcode Fonts with Business Central Online – Business Central | Microsoft Docs).
  • Create a new Visual Studio Code project.
  • Create a report extension.
  • Add the barcode al-code:

  • Create a custom layout in Business Central and download it.
  • Delete the custom layout in Business Central.
  • Open the layout in the report builder.
  • Add a textbox.
  • Set the source expression and font.
  • Save the layout to the Visual Studio Code project.
  • Compile and upload the report extension to Business Central.
  • Buy and install the font if OnPrem:

  • Upload the report extension to the customer system.

Permission sets in ForNAV 6.1

In earlier versions of the ForNAV report pack, non-superusers needed permission sets to be able to use ForNAV.

With the introduction of entitlement in Business Central, these are no longer required. For the ForNAV customizable report pack, the permission sets have been replaced by permission extensions.

This means that users with “D365 BUS PREMIUM” or “D365 BUS BASIC” permissions, can automatically access the permission necessary to use the ForNAV customizable report pack.

For older versions of the ForNAV customizable report pack, you still need to set up permission sets.

Format using report language

$
0
0

For decades, NAV and Business Central have let you switch language on-the-fly when printing out document reports, by setting the CurrReport.Language field in a report. From the start, the ForNAV report pack has leveraged this feature.

However, this has not been the case with formatting, which always followed the global language of the installation. This can lead to problems at the receiving end if the global language is US and the report language is European, or vice versa. It results in the decimal and group characters being swapped in decimal numbers, the day and month numbers swapped in dates, and hours reported as AM/PM or following the 24-hour clock.

For example:

  • October 9th 2020 is always formatted as 10/9/20 in the US and as 9/10/20 in Europe.
  • 1000 is always formatted as 1,000.00 in the US and as 1.000,00 in Europe.

To solve this issue, the ForNAV Designer now has a Format using report language property, which formats Decimal, Date, Time, and DateTime.

When the Format using report language property is set to True, values are always formatted according to the language set by the CurrReport.Language field and not by the global language.

ForNAV Customizable Report Pack for OnPrem

$
0
0

The ForNAV Customizable Report Pack is available on Microsoft AppSource for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Cloud.

Until now there has been a clear separation between ForNAV running OnPrem and on Cloud:

  • OnPrem: Uses a dll to render reports and piggybacks on RDLC layouts
  • Cloud: Uses a service to render reports and piggybacks on Word layouts

The problem with this has been that if you wanted to develop for Cloud – but wanted to use OnPrem or Docker instead of a Sandbox – the solution was to develop your ForNAV reports on the OnPrem solution and later reconvert them to Cloud

To make this easier, we are introducing the ForNAV Customizable Report Pack for OnPrem that enables you to develop for Cloud without using a Sandbox, to create, run, and modify ForNAV running on OnPrem or any Business Central Docker installation + build ForNAV report solutions using Azure DevOps.

The benefits include:

  • Rendering reports without the need for the ForNAV service, which speeds up rendering, keeps your data internal on your own server, and does not require connection to the internet.
  • No requirement to install a dll and no dependencies on Business Central .net.
  • Reports are upgraded simply by installing a new report pack, with no reconversion.
  • Requires same license as ForNAV OnPrem.
  • Reports and report layouts can be deployed to Business Central Cloud without reconversion.
  • Supports Azure DevOps.
  • 1:1 binary compatible with the ForNAV Cloud report pack (Customizable Report Pack) – the code is exactly the same.

There are a few limitations:

  • Limited AL-api, because there is no .net dll to code against.
  • Report output size is limited by memory and not diskspace (like ForNAV OnPrem).
  • Converted classic reports (using CurrReport.PageNo and/or using side-effects in section logic to control Showoutput) might not produce the expected output and the AL-code has to be modified. These constructs can easily be reconstructed in JavaScript, which is run in the service, and the report will work as before.
  • Because it relies on Business Central Runtime app packages, it is locked to a specific major Business Central version (initially BC18, BC19… when released from Microsoft).

To download the ForNAV Customizable Report Pack for OnPrem please use this link: https://www.fornav.com/products/rep/reportpack-cloudonprem/ReportPackRuntimeEmbedded.6.1.0.0.zip

The zip-file contains four BC extension (.app) files and a PowerShell installation script, which can be modified to meet your needs:

  • The ForNAV Language, ForNAV Core, and the Customizable Report Pack extensions are required and you must install them in the listed order.
  • The ForNAV Service extension is optional and is only needed if you want to run reports. If you just want to build against the ForNAV extensions using a build pipeline, you don’t need it.
  • You can modify the PowerShell installation file to your specific environment.

Creating email body text with ForNAV report layouts

$
0
0

When running a ForNAV layout stored in a Docx layout (currently only on Cloud), you can use it to create your email body content. Formatting options are limited but there are still a lot of features to choose from.

This means that when you use Business Central to send emails, you can use a single ForNAV report to produce both the email attachment and the body text.

The attachment is the actual report in a PDF format, whereas the body text is HTML code produced by the report. Our suggested best practice is to create a custom layout for the body text.

The following steps, using the statement report as an example, describe how to create email body text with ForNAV report layouts:

  • Create a new custom layout as a copy of the existing layout.

  • Rename the new layout so that you can locate it again.

  • Go to your customer card and select Document Layouts.

  • Specify the ForNAV statement report and select the new custom layout for the email body.

  • Now you can modify your custom report layout in the ForNAV Designer. We recommend that you delete all the header, body, and footer sections that come with the standard layout and create a single new header section for the email body content.

You can build the email content using normal controls with source expressions or create a label control and set the HTML text. In the HTML label, you can use field values as shown in the following:

  • Now save your custom layout and run the statement report with Email set as the output option. This produces an email with an attachment:

Support for Embed Apps on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

With the Customizable Report Pack 6.1.0.1 on Microsoft AppSource, ForNAV now supports Embed Apps on Business Central Cloud (To-Increase and others).

Embed Apps is an environment for ISVs who are not 100% compatible with the standard Business Central application. However, ForNAV can run on any Business Central 18 (or newer versions) Embed App as long as the standard Microsoft APIs are supported.

And don’t forget that, when the Embed App goes out of service, you can easily move your ForNAV reports and layouts to a normal Microsoft environment.

Replace your old ForNAV DLLs with a new version of the DLL

$
0
0

Please make sure you have read this article before continuing: https://www.fornav.com/knowledge-base/big-black-boxes-show-up-on-fornav-reports/

This article describes how you can replace your old ForNAV DLL’s with a new version of the DLL to get around the black box issue.

The service tier operation should only take 5-10 minutes and your users will only be affected for a few minutes.

Do this on all service tiers where ForNAV is installed:

  1. Go to your Microsoft Dynamics NAV or Business Central program folder on the server and find the Add-ins subfolder (for example: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\90\Service\Add-ins) and select the different Reports ForNAV folders:

You have one folder for each ForNAV DLL installed. You need to replace the DLL in each of these folders.

  2. Before going any further, please take a backup of all your current DLL’s – DO NOT copy them to the same folder (Report ForNAV_x_x_x_xxxx) or a subfolder to this.

  3. Note which DLL numbers you have installed (please be very accurate in getting the exact numbers).

  4. Go to https://bit.ly/ForNAV_Blackbox and find the equivalent DLL:

  5.

  6. If you are not able to find the DLL with the correct number, please contact support@fornav.com.

  7. When you have selected the DLL, right-click (or select the 3 vertical dots) and Download.

  8. When the download has finished, you get the following message:

  9. To save the DLL, right-click on the file and choose Keep

  10. You can now open your download folder and copy the DLL.

  11. You might need to unblock the new DLL before you can copy it:

  12. Stop the NAV/BC server (example: Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Server [BC150]), to make sure that the old DLL is not locked by Dynamics NAV/Business Central.
  13.

  14. Copy the new DLL to the equivalent Reports ForNAV folder above (step no. 1).
  15.

  16. Repeat step 4 to 10 and 12 if you have more than one DLL in the Reports ForNAV folder.
  17.

  18. If you have several service tiers, please repeat all the above for all of them.
  19.

  20. When you have done this for all service tiers, you need to restart your NAV/BC server.

On C/SIDE, you might get a runtime error when running a report. If so, you need to recompile your reports.

If you are running web-clients only, you are done. The black box issue should be gone.

If you are running Role Tailored Clients (RTC), please continue…

Do this on all RTC clients (PC’s):

  1. Go to your Microsoft Dynamics NAV or Business Central program folder on each client and find the Add-ins subfolder (for example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\90\RoleTailored Client\Add-ins\) and select the Reports ForNAV folder:

  2. Copy all the new DLL’s from the server to the Reports ForNAV folder on the client. DO NOT create individual folders for each DLL on the client.

Note!

You might wonder why this is relevant, as NAV/BC normally will copy DLL’s automatically to the client in NAV 2015 and newer versions. However, since the DLL has exactly the same version information (which it has to have for compatibility reasons), this will not happen automatically.

When you have done this on all your RTC clients, you are done. The black box issue should be gone.

However, there can be compatibility issues because older ForNAV reports have not been tested against new ForNAV binaries and the new versions can behave differently, especially when it comes to pagebreaks. If you see any issues, please report them to us (support@fornav.com).

Big black boxes show up on ForNAV reports

$

UPDATED November 1, 2021 – 14:20 CET

This article is relevant for OnPrem and Private Cloud customers only

Please read this entire article before making a decision about which approach to follow.

We have received a validation fix from Microsoft for testing, and it has removed the black boxes. Microsoft has informed us that they will start rolling out the new update November 9, 2021. We therefore maintain our recommendation for Option 1 below.

If you have any questions, please direct them to support@fornav.com

—oOo—

After a Microsoft Windows Cumulative Update (CU) was rolled out on October 12, 2021, some ForNAV reports render big black boxes on the output instead of borders or lines.

The problem is in Windows, where lines or borders with default width (the value is shown as 1 and non-bold in the property window), or with the width set to zero, are shown as black boxes instead of thin lines.

Microsoft will most likely roll out a new update that fixes this problem, because the previous behavior has worked in Windows programs for almost thirty years. We are in dialogue with the Microsoft Update team, but we do not know the timeframe for a possible fix. If you go to the Windows Feedback Hub (search for example “gdiplus”), you will see several posts on this topic.

We will keep you updated here when we have any news.

There are several ways to get around this problem:

Option 1 – roll back the Windows CU, and wait for an update from Microsoft

This is our recommended solution!

The short-term fix for this is to roll back the Windows CU:

  1. To identify the latest Windows CU, go to Windows Update, Update History and look for a recent update called 2021-10 Cumulative Update for Windows.
(Unfortunately, we cannot give you an exact KB number, as this varies depending on which version of Windows you are running.)

  2. To uninstall it, click Uninstall an Update.
  3. You might need to do this on both the server and the clients.

Option 2 – replace your old ForNAV DLL’s with a new version of the DLL

This is our workaround if you don’t want to wait for the Microsoft update or if Microsoft for some unlikely reason decide not to release an update.

Read more here: https://www.fornav.com/knowledge-base/replace-your-old-fornav-dlls-with-a-new-version-of-the-dll/

Option 3 – change the affected properties

As this issue only relates to so called “hairline” borders or lines, you may change these if you only have a few reports using this.

You can change the border width on the affected borders or lines to, for example, 0.1.

Option 4 – upgrade your ForNAV reports to the latest version

We always recommend to upgrade to the newest version of ForNAV, but we also understand that you might want to plan an upgrade and not do it as a workaround in this situation.

If you want to upgrade ForNAV to the newest version, you can find it here: www.fornav.com/download. To solve the black box issue, you need a version 6.1.0.2145 or newer.

You can read more about how to upgrade here: https://www.fornav.com/knowledge-base/upgrade-fornav-version/
